Research Focus

We’re bridging critical knowledge gaps with focused research through CPOP. Stay tuned as we explore opioid prescribing patterns, the impact of perinatal opioid use on maternal and child health, and the role of social determinants in opioid use.

BRIDGING THE KNOWLEDGE GAPS

Exploring Patterns, Impacts, and Social Determinants of Opioid Use

We’ve focused our research on addressing important knowledge gaps. Using data available through CPOP, we aim to investigate:

Opioid prescribing patterns

We will monitor the type of opioid exposure (e.g., pain, treatment for opioid use disorder, unregulated use), timing, duration, and dose in pregnancy and in the year after pregnancy.

Social determinants of opioid use

We will explore important social determinants of health (e.g., age, social disadvantage, geography) of people with perinatal opioid exposure.

Perinatal opioid use & child health and development

We will examine the impact of perinatal opioid use on maternal health outcomes (e.g., toxicity, death, violence, chronic health conditions, mental health, use of multiple medications).

Perinatal opioid use & maternal health

We will investigate child health outcomes from birth up to 8 years old (e.g., neonatal health, preventive health care, neurodevelopmental disorders, early development, vision/eye health).
